Vio-trap

Description

Vio-trap is a specialized trap for treating the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) and uses the Attract (Lure) and Kill method. The environmental impact is low so the trap is approved for the Integrated, Organic and Conventional Agriculture. The trap is fully compatible with the 834/07 EU Regulation on the organic farming.
It is manufactured as a polyethylene envelope enhanced with a contact insecticide (deltamethrin) containing aqueous solution of trophic attractive.
The method concerns the attraction of the flies on the trap surface, which is enhanced with insecticide. The insect absorbs a small amount of active substance via its chemoreceptors and is eliminated a few minutes later.

Instructions

  • The trap that you have in your possession is ready to be hanged. Before you place it on the tree puncture the trap with an awl or a large nail at both points marked with an (Χ).
  • The trap MUST NOT TOUCH ANY LEAVES AND BRANCHES and MUST NOT BE EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT (Mount it inside the crown of the tree and in the middle of its height).
  • The application dosage consists of 15-20 traps per 1000m² and the proposed method of implementation is as seen in the picture above. For application in an area less than 3 decares it is recommended to place one trap per tree.
  • When suspended to comply with all the precautions that apply to pesticides.
  • The trap is manufactured in conformity with Law 2092/91 concerning organic farming and fully compatible with the organic cultivation of olive trees and other fruit-bearing trees.

Potential problems, diagnosis and treatments

  1. The traps that are exposed to the sun lose their insecticidal action and their green color. These traps are not effective and should be replaced immediately.
  2. The traps that were hanged without being punctured will not work; activate them by puncturing the points indicated.
  3. The result of their action is not desired when not placed in the correct dosage. Check the number of traps per decare.
  4. Rainfalls during the critical for the olive fruit fly months that in total exceed the 150 millimeters launder the insecticide (Deltamethrin) from the surface of the trap. Replace the traps.
  5. In cases where the collection of olives is done after November 15th and a warm fall is expected, hang 7 extra traps per decare from September 1-15.
  6. You can’t see the insects on top of the trap or underneath it. The insect does not stick to the trap but is exterminated a few minutes later away from the trap.

The maximum duration of the trap’s action is 4.5 months
PRECAUTIONS: Keep away from food, beverages and animal feeds. Do not eat or smoke while using it and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear suitable gloves. In case of insufficient ventilation use the appropriate breathing apparatus.
FIRST AID: If you feel sick, seek medical advice. In case of irritation of the eyes wash immediately with abundant water and consult an eye doctor. In case of irritation of the skin wash with abundant water and soap and seek for medical advice.
ANTIDOTE: Symptomatic treatment.

Know-how for growers

Vio-trap is an mean of control of the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) which should be applied in a timely manner according to the instructions, given that even in years of small population it causes damage to the olive fruit.
It must be noted that each female gives birth to 180-350 eggs 50% (half) of which in the next generation are once again females giving a potential of infection capable in two generation to cause huge damages if the climate conditions are also helpful.
3-5 generations per year have been observed in Greece. Thus a single female who will find optimal conditions and its descendents are not controlled in some way, will give populations more than a billion (1.000.000.000) insects.
Also it should be noted that the olive fruit fly, although a monophagus insect of olive, uses alternative food sources as an adult that helps it be more active and aggressive and also survive in adverse conditions.
Time of implementation: The correct time of implementation varies depending on the year’s climate conditions and for Greece it begins on the 1st of June until the 20th of July and the method of determining the exact date can and should be done with ‘McPhail’ traps.
A very early fructification is expected for 2010 in the southern parts of the country and the hanging of traps must take place in May. The correct time of trap suspension is when the olive fruit flies begin flights and before the females become fertile.
Operation of trap: The trap exterminates the populations of the olive fruit fly from the first 3-4 days of its action with possibility of extermination of many thousands insects per day.
One thing it cannot do is to kill the eggs that have already been born and the emigrational females that are ready to give birth and come from nearby olive groves.
A good measure that has been applied is the limited fertilization of nitrogen and watering, avoiding the good nourishment of the olive tree, the part that attracts all population of the olive fruit flies from the surrounding area.
